The firm provides a complement of planning and design services, from conceptual and preliminary design through final design, construction plans, specifications and estimates, contract administration, bidding services, construction coordination and observation services, and close-out.


Fort Collins Citywide Signal Timing

 

Muller Engineering developed and implemented traffic signal timing plans for 150 traffic signals along 10 arterial corridors in Fort Collins (including 42 signals along State Highways 14 and 287). The City of Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University and, as such, the safe and efficient movement of pedestrians and bicyclists is a key element in operating the City’s traffic signal system. Using Synchro/SimTraffic™ and Tru-Traffic™ software, Muller developed four sets of optimized signal timing plans to address weekday and weekend peak periods as well as off-peak travel conditions. Muller’s engineers worked closely with City staff on all aspects of the project from coordinating data collection, model calibration, cycle selection, work order preparation, field implementation and project documentation. Muller’s staff also conducted special evaluations to identify potential operational improvements relating to bicycle travel, pedestrian safety, and turn lane storage needs. The project provided an annual user benefit of $17,000,000, resulting in a project benefit cost ratio of 56:1. The project was completed on-time and under budget.

West Colfax (US 40) Corridor Transportation Study and Design

 

With the anticipated construction of the RTD West Corridor light rail line, the City of Denver asked Muller to evaluate current and projected transportation conditions to develop recommendations for short and midterm transportation improvements in the West Colfax corridor from Federal Boulevard to Sheridan Boulevard. The study investigated the feasibility of changing the existing cross section to include, but not be limited to on-street parking, medians, pedestrian facility upgrades, transit improvements and access management. The on-street parking scenario was desired by local businesses along the West Colfax Corridor to help improve business redevelopment opportunities. Muller accompanied Denver staff, meeting with business owners along the corridor and developing consensus with project participants, including CDOT, Denver and RTD.

Muller developed traffic analysis models based on current and future operating conditions in the travel shed to help evaluate alternative improvement scenarios. Pedestrian and transit elements were evaluated and several on-street parking alternatives were analyzed with conceptual designs and cost estimates. An on-street parking alternative was recommended with parking on alternating sides of the street.

Based on Muller’s performance on this project, an additional task order was issued for Muller to complete plans, specifications and estimates for the project improvements.

CDOT On-Call Traffic Engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Services


Muller Engineering was recently selected for its third contract to provide on-call traffic engineering and ITS services to CDOT’s Front Range Regions (1, 2, 4 and 6), the Colorado Transportation Management Center (CTMC), and Headquarters.
